PROFESSIONAL STATEMENT

My interest in counselling sprouted from my decade-long tenure as a special needs teacher, working closely with students facing learning difficulties such as Autism, ADHD, and Dyslexia. Witnessing their mental health struggles underscored the need for better psychological support for youth. Simultaneously, my personal counselling journey highlighted the power of self-discovery in fostering positive change. These experiences shaped my role as a counsellor by providing a safe and compassionate space for clients to embark on their own journey of self-exploration and healing.

In my practice, I offer individual (adults and adolescents), couples, and family counselling. I have experience in addressing anxiety disorders, mood disorders (e.g., depression), neurodevelopmental and learning disorders, work-related stress, grief and loss, trauma, and have a special interest in working with neurodiverse individuals and those who struggle with addiction (substance and behavioural).

I am trained in both Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). Through CBT, we will work on challenging negative thought patterns, establishing a more balanced way of thinking and creating new daily routines to promote positive mental changes. I am also a strong believer in how past trauma can have a big impact on our present functioning. With EMDR, I work collaboratively with you to help use the mind’s natural ability to heal from past memories and adopt more adaptive beliefs and improve functioning. With this integrative approach, together we will work through your presenting difficulties and address the root cause of the pain at a comfortable pace.

Through concepts from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), my approach to couples therapy looks to build an understanding of each other’s needs, identify and intentionally shift relational patterns and nurture stronger communication. This may also involve working individually with each partner to help facilitate a deeper change which can help bring out the best of each person within the relationship.

When working with the younger population, I take a more holistic approach by not only working with the child but also working with the parents to facilitate a comprehensive shift within the entire family system. I look to provide a safe-space for the child to be vulnerable and accepted while also helping them to understand and regulate their emotions better. Parent’s active involvement in this process is vital and this would include helping to adjust interactional patterns within the family and creating a judgment-free space for the child to openly share their inner world.

ABOUT ME

Growing up with a mixed heritage (Malay-Irish) has given me the opportunity to connect with people of all walks of life. In my free time, I enjoy playing video games, playing football, cycling and jamming on the piano. Outside of the counselling room, I am a board member of the Trauma Therapy Association. I am hoping to build awareness regarding trauma and the impact it has on our lives while also creating a solid foundation and community for trauma-informed therapy in Malaysia.
